Dumpster Gold: How I Turned Wire Spools into Rolling Portable Targets

I’ve built a lot of portable shooting targets over the years. After trying everything from basic wooden frames to fancy designs, I realized there’s no point spending money on something that’s going to get shot up and weather-beaten anyway.

That’s why I source almost everything from dumpsters.

Reclaimed pallet wood is my go-to for basic targets — it’s free, the dimensions work perfectly, and you won’t cry over an errant shot. With some elbow grease and the right tools, it's easy to pry apart a pallet. If that’s too much work, a multitool lets you cut it up quickly without fully salvaging every board.

But last month I hit the jackpot in a construction dumpster: large wire spools.

Wooden spools

The moment I saw them I knew they were perfect ready-made target stands. Here’s why:

  • They’re built like tanks — engineered to hold hundreds of pounds of wire.
  • They’re round, so you can just tip them on their side and roll them anywhere. No heavy lifting needed.
  • They have a perfect central hole running the full length — drop a 2x3 through it and you instantly have a rock-solid target post.

For the target backer, I used an old contractor yard sign I also pulled from the trash. (I "blacked out" the lettering for privacy in the above photo.) I intentionally offset the sign instead of centering it so the post lasts longer; if you center it, the lumber gets chewed up fast.

You can also place two spools side-by-side and span a larger sign across both posts for bigger targets.

Quick Notes:

  • Wear gloves and watch for nails/splinters when working with reclaimed wood.
  • Check local laws — dumpster diving is legal in many places but not everywhere.
  • Skip campaign yard signs as target backers. In today's political climate, it can send the wrong message even if that wasn’t your intent.

Dumpsters really are a national treasure. Next time you drive past one, take 30 seconds to peek inside. With a little imagination, you can turn yesterday's trash into tomorrow's range material – often better than anything you can buy.
