The Benefits of a Gun Range Quickie

Shooting is a perishable skill. You can't take one intro class, buy your first gun (hopefully you do it in that order), stash it in the safe to gather dust, and call yourself a Proud Gun Owner™️.

Real proficiency takes ongoing practice and continuing education. But most of us are slammed with work, family, and life. Finding time for full range sessions every weekend  like a dedicated "Range Rat" isn’t always realistic.

That’s where the gun range quickie comes in. If you can carve out just 20-30 minutes, it’s often enough to keep your fundamentals sharp. I try to fit these gun range "quickies" into my schedule whenever I can; sometimes I have an unplanned quickie when the opportunity arises. Carpe diem!

I keep my range bag staged and ready: magazines filled with rounds and neatly cased, paper targets, hearing protection, eye protection, etc. so I can hit the road at moment's notice.

Living just 15 minutes from my local range makes it easy. When I have a one-hour opening, I grab the bag, head out, send some rounds downrange, and I’m back before I know it.

These "quickies" keep my skills fresh and my fundamentals solid. So when it counts, my skills are there because I didn’t let them fade.
